Kelly's Priorities

Over the course of the last 7 years, I have increased family engagement, secured funding for our schools, and initiated new environmental education programs and facilities for our students.

As a local parent and volunteer with an extensive education background, I will bring rigor and student-first thinking to our school board. I am committed to solving problems, not creating them, for our school district and the students of Laguna Beach.

1: prioritizing continuous improvement and Student success

All students can continuously succeed, even in the face of COVID-19.

I will work to ensure every student can continuously succeed. Continuous improvement focuses on the unique needs of, and personalized success for each learner. And yes, we need students to demonstrate academic growth. I also embrace a broader definition of student success. It is more than test scores, grades and performance; it is student wellness and engagement with learning.

2: FIGHTING social intolerance

Teaching students to be compassionate to themselves and others.

I will make it a priority to actively expand and adapt our own tool kits and strategies to support an equitable and anti-racist school climate. A positive school climate has been shown time and time again by educational research to improve student outcomes. Action in this area would also combat other forms of discrimination, such as that on the basis of sexuality, gender, religion, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status or disability. I pledge to better educate myself and seek out research-based programs that have a measurable impact.

3: Advancing green schools

Improving school sustainability, which includes net-zero emission facilities, coordinated school health and effective environmental education for all students.

I would like to see schools: 1) reduce environmental impacts, such as waste, water, energy, greenhouse gases, and transportation in the areas of facilities, grounds, and operations; 2) improve health and wellness through coordinated school health, with consideration to air quality, contaminant control, acoustics, daylighting, thermal comfort, school nutrition, and outdoors physical activity; and 3) offer effective environmental and sustainability education that emphasizes hands-on, real-world learning, civic engagement, STEM connections, and green career preparation.
